Special price, just for you

Lately we have been playing around with the idea of moving to a two bedroom apartment, so that we could have a dedicated office that can double as a guest room when we get visits from the olden country. And since we found our current little hideaway on gumtree.com, it felt just natural to give the site another try. If you don’t know, gumtree is a ad site, where you can find apartments, jobs or other shit. And as on every ad site on the internet, there might be people there that aren’t necessarily honest. And we found one of the those.

While searching for apartments we came across one by Putney Heath: a two bedroom flat to only £700 a month. Wow, almost to good to be true. But we had to give it a go just in case, and sent an inquiry email through gumtree, and got this answer:

OK, £700 for a fully furnished apartment with everything included. There must be something wrong here. A little googling found the name Hodge Alexander mentioned in a scam involving selling a video camera a while back. And we also found some examples on apartment scams on gumtree. A common scam is that the supposed landlord says he is not in the area of the apartment right now, and he will need proof that you are able to pay the rent and deposit. Just so that he knows he have a reason to come back to where the apartment is, and show it to you. It would be a shame if you tried to scam him, right? To prove that you are able to pay the future rent, he asks you to prove this by making a money transfer through Western Union.

But, to try to convince you that the scammer is not scamming you, he’ll tell you to wire the money to a friend of yours and not him. And just mail him the receipt of the transfer. He just need proof that you are able to pay. But after you send him the receipt, he will print it out, take the identity of your friend, and withdraw the money at a Western Union branch. And you have no apartment, it wasn’t even his to begin with anyway, and you have lost two months rent.

But we played along, and mailed him back:

Hi!
We are very much interested in the flat, and are primarily looking to
rent for two years (May/June 2012).
But we would need to have a look at the apartment before we make up
our mind. Is this possible, and in that case, when?
Deposit is no problem.

Hey, presto! So there you go, case closed. We stopped there, not sure what good it would do to keep going and pretend further, as some people like to do. Although it would be interesting to see just how bad his spelling would end up (although, I probably shouldn’t be the one to complain about just that). My friend Alexander has not tried to mail to ask why I haven’t answered, and the ad is long gone from gumtree. A few days later, however, we found another two bedroom flat to £700, this time in Putney, and sent a new mail, and got the exact same answer back, only that this time it was from a Carlos Lee, and he was in Scotland. We didn’t bother to ask for a viewing.

So the moral of this story is, as it often is, if something is to good to be true, it most likely is. And there are a lot of bastards in the world.

UPDATE 1st December 2010

As you can read from the comments (from some very smart people) below this post, the scam is also happening on CraigsList. Even with the same name. Luckily these fine people didn’t fall for the scam, but as the case often are, someone most likely has. Otherwise they would have stopped this particular scam, and tried something new. So if you have come across this post because an online ad has made you suspicious, please write when and where in the comments field, so that others can be warned.

Hes now pulling the same scan on craigs list.

My name is Alexander Hodge and I received your email of interest for the rental of my apartment located in Sydney at this address: Jones St, Sydney Ultimo NSW 2007, Australia.
I’m looking for someone to live in the apartment, as soon as possible, because my company has won an auction for a big construction project in Liverpool, United Kingdom. I’m a project manager in civil engineering, so my accommodation period here will be very large (more than 7 years).
I would like to know a little something about you, like how many persons do you intend to live in my apartment, for what period, etc. I must tell you from the beginning that I don’t have a problem if you are a student and I don’t have a problem with pets.
Now I am going to tell you something about the apartment and myself so we can get to know each other.
The apartment is furnished, but I have the option of sending all my furniture into my private storage if you want to bring your own (no extra costs). The rent is $250 per week / $1000 per month (for the whole apartment) including some utilities (water, electricity, internet, cable, parking).
About myself, I am 50 years old and as I told you I am a project manager and my job even though it pays very well takes all of my time. I bought this apartment while I was working on a 4 year contract in Australia.
You can move in the apt in the same day when you receive the keys. The only problem is that I`m the only person who has the keys but I hope that we will find a solution. For more photos you can visit this link: http://img707.imageshack.us/slideshow/webplayer.php?id=96051020.jpg
Thank you for your interest and looking forward to a future collaboration and friendship.

    Hello Marian,

I apologize for the delay. My name is Alexander Hodge and I received your email of interest for the rental of my apartment located in Auckland at this address: 196 Hobson Street, City Center, Auckland 1010.
I’m looking for someone to live in my apartment, because my company has won an auction for a big construction project in Liverpool, United Kingdom. I’m a project manager in civil engineering, so my accommodation period here will be very large (more than 7 years).
I’d like to know something about you, like how many persons intend to live in my apartment, for what period, etc. I must tell you from the beginning that I don’t have a problem if you are a student or smoker but I’d prefer if you smoked on the balcony.
Now let me tell you something about the apartment and myself so we can get to know each other.
The apartment is very spacious (91 m²) and fully furnished, but I have the option of sending all my furniture into my private storage if you want to bring your own (no extra costs). The rent is $350 per week / $1400 per month (for the whole apartment) including some utilities (water, electricity, internet, cable, parking).

    Hi,

Thank you for your web site! Very useful information related to our friend Mr. Alexander Hodge. He is now operating in Finland, I got 2 e-mails from him during last week. He is published an online rent apartment ads on Oikotie.fi service. It’s a leading apartment’s marketing place in Finland. The ads was a really good and looks ok, that’s the reason why I contacted to him. It was my luck that I started to Google his name and find your great web site and all stories what Alexander is done.

He is now using e-mail address: alexander.hodger11@msn.com

    Please see e-mails:

    1ST LETTER FROM ALEXANDER HODGER
    ——————————–

    Hello,

My name is Alexander Hodger and I just got an e-mail regarding your interest in my apartment in Vironkatu 9 , 00170 Helsingfors, Finland. I’m looking for someone to live in my apartment, because my company has won an auction for a big construction project in Liverpool, United Kingdom. I’m a project manager in civil engineering, so my accommodation period here will be very large (more than 5 years). I’m a english engineer. I bought this flat when I worked in Helsinki as part of a 5 year contract, thinking it would be a better investment than taking in rent. I am the single owner, the apartment is fully paid and there is no legal problem. The apartment is unoccupied since I no longer live there.
I want to rent my apartment to some nice and responsible persons, so I would like to know more details about yourself : How old are you, if you are married, if you have a pet, if you have a car, occupation etc.. I must say that I have nothing against the fact that you’re a student and I love pets and they are welcome in the apartment. You should also know that I appreciate the sincerity.
In addition to the rest, here is some information about myself and about the apartment, so we knew a little more.
The apartment is exactly like in the pictures, fully furnished, fully equipped, 52sqm. You won’t need anything to move in (you can also bring your own things furniture if you have).
The monthly rent is EUR 600/month (for the whole apartment), expenses included (water, electricity, internet, cable). You can rent the apartment for an indefinite period, but for a minimum period of four months.
About myself, I am 51 years old, single man, and as mentioned above I am a project manager in civil engineering, currently living in Liverpool, United Kingdom. You can move into the apartment the same day you receive the keys. The only problem is that I’m already in UK, but I already though at a solution so you can get the keys and visit the apartment to make an impression.
I appreciate your interest in my apartment and I’m looking forward to our future collaboration and friendship.

    Sincerely,
    Alexander
PS: I can send you a copy of my ID, passport, driving license, civil engineer degree etc in order to know each other better. If you do not understand english, you can use http://www.translate.google.com, because my finnish is very bad.

    2ND LETTER FROM ALEXANDER HODGER
    ——————————–

    Hello XXXXXXXXXXX,

Thank you for your prompt response and for your kind email. If you are still interested I agree to rent it to you. I promise you that you will love the place. You seem to be a nice person and I can assure you we will not have any problems.
Of course you will have to see the apartment before discussing further details because you cannot rent an apartment that you haven’t seen. I am willing to send you the keys so you can visit it and see it suits your needs.
The delivery for the keys (apartment keys, interphone, alarm) and viewing permit (signed by me), will be made through an authorized courier and using a Moneybookers Escrow Account to make sure that we can trust each other.
I will explain the procedure if you are interested so please email me as soon as you read this message because I really need to take care of this matter.

    Thank you,
    Alexander

    Hello again!

I just like to update my earlier posting.

I contacted to Oikotie.fi online service and they are removed the ads what Alexander Hodger published.

Also they informed that they will try to check his/her identity, well… would be quite difficult.

And he/she is operating with several names in Finland, I found out one Finnish language forum topic where few people are even lost their money.

Please see: http://keskustelu.suomi24.fi/node/9249271#comment-48485273 (unfortunately in Finnish language).

If it’s ok I will add a short message to that online forum and I’ll mention also your great blog about this.

It’s our benefit to put all things visible!

    Thanks for your effort!

By the way, Mr. Hodger contacted again and start to write how the Moneybookers works:
    ——————————-

Important mainly because it was sent directly to you.

    Hello XXXXXXXXXX,

Using Moneybookers escrow account involves three parties: me as owner, you as a potential tenant and Moneybookers as a responsible third party authorized to proper conduct of the transaction. Please click on the link to the Moneybookers website where you can find the procedure explained : https://www.moneybookers.com/app/help.pl?s=escrow&l=EN

The Escrow Account Moneybookers works the same way as the escrow account on which you place the deposit when you rent an apartment, except that instead of a bank, we use Moneybookers. Of course, nobody can touch that money until you have not returned the keys.
The rental deposit, the first month’s rent and one month as a guarantee, must be filed by bank transfer to activate the escrow account.
The delivery will be by a licensed company such as DHL, Federal Express or UPS and it will be sent by Moneybookers at your home.
To initiate the process, I need the following information about you:
    -Shipping Address (address where you want the package to be delivered) and name of recipient;
    -Delivery Schedule (local time you’ll be at home to receive the package and sign the receipt);
    -Phone number;
Then Monkeybookers sends you the keys and the contract already filled with your details; You will have 14 days to inspect apartment since the arrival date; If you want to keep the apartment, they give me the money, and we go on from there; If you do not keep the apartment, you send the keys/contract back to moneybookers and you get your money back.
This will be in writing in the moneybookers contract I will sign.
The MoneyBookers fees will be paid by me when I will initiate the procedure, you will have to pay for the money transfer fees when you pay the deposit.
If you agree to move forward I can send you a copy of my ID’s for reassurance, and a copy of the rental contract in blank.
I’ll wait your quick reply and if you agree, I will need your full name, shipping address and your phone number (mobile if possible) so I can initiate the moneybookers rental transaction.
Thanks again for your time and look forward to hear from you soon.
    Sincerely,
    Alexander

Using Moneybookers escrow account involves three parties: me as owner, you as a potential tenant and Moneybookers as a responsible third party authorized to proper conduct of the transaction. Please click on the link to the Moneybookers website where you can find the procedure explained : https://www.moneybookers.com/app/help.pl?s=escrow&l=EN

The Escrow Account Moneybookers works the same way as the escrow account on which you place the deposit when you rent an apartment, except that instead of a bank, we use Moneybookers. Of course, nobody can touch that money until you have not returned the keys.
The bond, the first month’s rent, must be filed by bank transfer to activate the escrow account.
The delivery will be by a licensed company such as DHL, Federal Express or UPS and it will be sent by Moneybookers at your home.
To initiate the process, I need the following information about you:
    -Shipping Address (address where you want the package to be delivered) and name of recipient;
    -Delivery Schedule (local time you’ll be at home to receive the package and sign the receipt);
    -Phone number;
If you agree to move forward I can send you a copy of the rental contract in blank.
I’ll wait your quick reply and if you agree, I will need your full name, shipping address and your phone number (mobile if possible) so I can initiate the moneybookers rental transaction.
Thanks again for your time and look forward to hear from you soon.

    Sincerely,
    Alexander

Thanks god you guys put this on the internet! He is also active in the Netherlands, on http://www.marktplaats.nl. I was looking for an apartment in Amsterdam and got the reaction below, and indeed under the new name Alexander HodgeR..

    Hello,

My name is Alexander Hodger and I just got an e-mail regarding your interest in my apartment in Staalstraat 7B, 1011 Amsterdam, The Netherlands. I’m looking for someone to live in my apartment, because my company has won an auction for a big construction project in Liverpool, United Kingdom. I’m a project manager in civil engineering, so my accommodation period here will be very large (more than 5 years). I bought this flat when I worked in Amsterdam as part of a 5 year contract, thinking it would be a better investment than taking in rent.
The apartment is exactly like in the pictures, fully furnished, fully equipped, so you won’t need anything to move in (you can also bring your own things furniture if you have).
The monthly rent is 1000 EUR (for the whole apartment), utilities included (water, electricity, internet, cable).

    Sincerely,
    Alexander
PS: I can send you a copy of my ID, driving license, passport, civil engineer degree etc in order to know each other better. If you do not understand english, you can use http://www.translate.google.com , because my dutch is very bad.

    and low and behold

    Hello,
As I’ve told you in my previous email, I have a busy schedule and it’s very hard for me to come in UK. I can’t
take the risk to leave my new job for couple of days and when I arrive in UK to find out that I came for nothing. I
want to be 100% sure that when we’ll meet, you have money to pay for camera and sign the paper for receiving. For
this reason I want to complete this deal in the safest way possible, for both.
You’ll have to arrange the payment from your name and address to your best friend’s name and address in UK, using
Western Union Service, with 850 GBP. As soon as I see the scanned receipt as a proof that you’ve made the payment, I
will fly to UK and you will see the camera and maybe buy it if you like. Meanwhile you can withdraw the funds from
    Western Union.
All you have to do is to find a western Union office, wire 850 GBP to your friend and send me the scanned
receipt. I am asking you this to be sure that I do not come in UK for nothing. Hope you can understand my situation.
P.S : As soon as I have the confirmation from Western Union that the money are available, I’ll book a flight. I look
    forward to hearing from you!
    Regards,
    Alexander

I decided to tell him that i would be happy to transfer the money directly to him ( hehe) and that i would be happy for him to post it from what ever country he is in.

got an email back this time from Daven morgan again giving me an address in middlesborough, england to send the money to.

I googled the address and its a small electrical repairs business owned by a man of a different name. unfortunately they were closed so i left a message asking him to call me back. if his not in on it then he should know that some one is using his address.

pretty bord at the min so wouldn’t mind bring mr alexander hodge to justice.

any suggestions on a next course of action?

Wow, impressed how you guys took it this far. Could be interesting to see how far you could go, and if you manage to get some info on who our good friend actually is. So just go for it, see how much you can dig up.

    okay guys,

I really have an e-mail history with Alexander Hodger by now. Today he sent me copies of his ID, driver’s licence and a blank contract for the appartment. He is truly pushing me and my partner to pay the amount of €1650,- via Moneybookers in order to receive the keys.

Today, I called the actual ‘owner/shop’ who is situated on the location it concerns, for mentioning that their ‘address’ is for rent (kind of). I already called the police, but since there is no transaction involved, it is just seen as an announcement.

The actual owner of the building is going to call the police as well, since this has to stop right?!

What do you guys think? Should I confront ‘Alexander Hodger’ how long he is planning to keep on cheating?

    Regards,

    I’ll keep you posted!

By the way: I really agree with superslinky bringing Alexander Hodge(r) to justice!

I was actually really surprised he uses the same name over and over again. Would that not make it easier for us?

    Good day everyone!

This is what I sent today to Mr. Alexander. I wanted to take it further, but that would have cost me money I believe. I am actually interested in what his response will be on this mail:

    Dear Alexander,

Don’t you just hate it, when you put a lot of effort in searching for something, then you find it, get really excited and it seems to be a scam? You just have to know Mr. Alexander, me and my boyfriend work really hard to achieve several goals. Enjoying live, but also saving money to eventually start our own business. You must know, in these times, it is not very easy to save money.

You really broke my heart. As I said, I put a lot of effort in searching for housing, which is very difficult in *location*. I must have a place to stay for work, and thereby I arranged already other administrative things for moving. It’s good to know that still not everyone can be trusted and it keeps me sharp. It is a pity though.

Luckily, we did not transfer any money yet. We are dependable on every penny we spend, so good for us that we followed our instincts. You are 51 years old – if that’s even true – so probably you already been through the difficult/hard times in your life. Let other people not suffer more than they already should.

I really would like to have a reply on this e-mail, but if I must depend on my instincts again, I believe you will not have the guts to do so.

Thank you, for losing my trust in others!

    Regards,

So guys, maybe it is a bit ‘over-the-top’, but I just wanted him to read/know this.

So….I believe this is the end, but if I receive something back, you will hear from me again! By the way, can I post the copies of the ID and driving licence Alexander send me?

I wish superslinky good luck with his challenge!

Hello, He seems having a lot of appartments.. here in Zurich… look at the “explainations” …

    Hello,

My name is Alexander Hodger and I just got an e-mail regarding your interest in my apartment in Mühlegasse 5, 8001 Zürich. I’m looking for someone to live in my apartment, because my company has won an auction for a big construction project in Liverpool, United Kingdom. I’m a project manager in civil engineering, so my accommodation period here will be very large (more than 5 years). I’m a portuguese engineer. I bought this flat when I worked in Switzerland as part of a 5 year contract, thinking it would be a better investment than taking in rent.
Well, he moved to Liverpool and offers something in Munich now! Bastard!!!

    Hello,
I apologize for the delay. My name is Alexander Hodge and I received your email of interest for the rental of my apartment located in Munchen at this address: Dreimühlenstraße 8, 80469 Munchen.
I must tell you from the beginning that I don’t have a problem if you are a student or smoker.
Now let me tell you something about the apartment and myself so we can get to know each other.
The apartment is very spacious (55 m²) and fully furnished, but I have the option of sending all my furniture into my private storage if you want to bring your own (no extra costs). The rent is €520 per month including some utilities (electricity, internet-flatrate DSL-broadband 16000 – download up to 16.000 kBit/s, cable, parking).
About myself, I’m 50 years old and as I told you I’m a project manager and my job even though it pays very well takes all of my time. I bought this apartment while I was working on a 4 year contract in Germany.
You can move in the apt in the same day you receive the keys. The only problem is that I`m the only person who has the keys but I hope that we will find a solution. For more photos you can visit this link: http://img69.imageshack.us/slideshow/webplayer.php?id=93955807.jpg
Thank you for your interest and looking forward to a future collaboration and friendship.

    Sincerely,

Same with me, but this time Daniela Baer.
Thanks Google I found info about moneybookers scam before making any transactions

My name is Baer Daniela, I am 29 years old and I am the owner of this apartment. I have lived in this beautiful apartment for 2 years and have enjoyed every day of it. The apartment includes parking, a storage unit where you can assume my furniture (if you want to bring your own furniture you have this option). There is also a laundry room with washing machine and dryer. Pets are allowed.I am looking for a responsible person for it and hope you can tell me some personal information about yourself. The monthly rent is 5000 + 1500 DKK utilities (water, electricity, internet, television, parking, air conditioning, fireplace, dishwasher, garbage disposal) thus, the monthly rent 6500 DKK.I live in, most recently in United Kingdom, London. I don`t have any pets and i also kept the apartment clean. This would be a perfect home for you. The only problem is that we have a Moneybookers agency to use to close this transaction, an agency that will look for our best interest. I have already arranged with Moneybookers, where I have left the keys and rental agreement signed by me to use their escrow service, a service that accepts the payment and delivery for us. If you are interested in renting my apartment please reply back and I will give you all the details about how Moneybookers works interested step by step.

    Thank you!
    Baer Daniela
